Every year, in the summer, Mediterranean cities rediscovers the sea. Season after season, Taranto city finds its memory again. The story began a long time ago and it is part of a deep consciousness, assimilated by the entire city, which has almost vanished now. It could result as the contemporary history of this place, a Mediterranean city that suffers from amnesia. The loss of memory linked to the sea, where everything was born, probably occurred due to the settlements within the surrounding landscape, which has completely changed its conformation; the horizon on earth is not the same as before and what now remains is the Ionian Sea. What is remarkable is the wealth that this city contains, a treasure deeply tied to the Mediterranean landscape and praised by François Lenormat during his journey as an “incomparable beauty”. The old city, called “Città Vecchia” in the Italian language, has become the perfect place to start reconstruction. However, where fisherman lived in the past, now the market is being created to host new people and new life. So three projects are designed, “built”, for a new future of the city, for people: a Museum of the Sea and the Navy, a Fish Market […]

Signs of mediations made of land and sea, tense architectures, lighthouses are iconic places of the maritime landscapes. Sicily is located in an absolute prominent position; its lighthouses belong  to a wide heritage of navigational signals with unique histories.  The tendency about the reuse of abandoned lighthouses usually promotes the creation of exclusive locations and an elitist tourism, which don’t involve the communities of the territory they are connected with. Reversing the course means to turn this tendency around, in order to preserve the authenticity of a place whose value lies in traditions, considering sites’ specific needs. From the landscape to interior’ details, the attention focuses on the restitution of this places to the islanders. The meaning of the lighthouses also reverses: the light becomes a landmark not only for the sea, but also for the micro-communities of the island, an opportunity for meetings and developments. In the island of Marettimo, at “Punta Libeccio” lighthouse, a biology centre hosts researchers interested in studying sea floors and hikers. The lighthouse has a terrace overlooking the sea and it is the arrival point of a walking path, marked with a new network of perspective points of view, in order to discover the place […]

Marson Korbi. The lived wall around the light house

The Lived Room around the Lighthouse relates and compares with the typical Mediterranean plastic-wall language that we notice in: castles forts, paved alleys and urban squares that create a spatial relationship between solids and voids inside of these system, offer the main inspiration for this project. The choice is to create a fortress or a basement from outside the lighthouse. Three courtyards where each of these has a different spatial character and different functions: the main courtyard in line with the lighthouse where we find the exhibition spaces of the Museum of Photography and the City and the temporary exhibition rooms, the large square, a reference point of the complex with the outdoor theatre and finally, the third courtyard with offices, small exhibition rooms and the restaurant with a large sea view window. The last element of the basement is the lighthouse suites accommodation. This basement system with cuts and courtyards, opens to the sea. The connection with the sea in a rocky pendant terrain is done by wooden walkways, light elements detaching from the plastic-wall fortes. Part of the light system inside this fortress, is the lighthouse landscape hotel and the sea center.  The system ends with the vertical […]

Fabrizia Mattiello. The labyrinth and the fragment

Labyrinth   The territory is configured as a large not centered labyrinth. A labyrinth “that exhibits a plurality of paths, divisions and contradictions, rather than expressions of unity and coherence”. A labyrinth composed of reticular connections strained between discrete points. A plot of lines of sedimentation, accumulation, stratification, but also lines of cracking, fracture. In this tangle each of us is invited to dissolve the skein and measure their ability to move in the labyrinth… Fragments   of all The Labyrinth, generated by the process of deconstruction of the modern city, it is built with the fragments of all. Each fragment, remnant of the primitive urbis form, it expresses inside a labyrinthine condition. Its genetic code contains information of interrupted relations with the whole…Transfigure the damaged rest of the fragment through a writing system made up of pieces, marginal notes, associating elements of different nature, objet trouvé, introducing minor alterations of language, typological deformations, able to generate in the context a crowding-out effect in poetic reaction. Degraded materials Only option is to build with these degraded materials new rhapsodic narratives, new syncopated writings, recognizing the relativity of one’s actions.

Home is a small book of memories, mental images and collages between abstraction and figuration. Home distorts the codes of the house and creates chimeras, assemblies, tellings without characters which are all potential stories.

Claudio Cortese. Pavillion House

This composition is the representation of an imaginary pavilion, voluntarily rather mysterious that is composed by huge ice blocks that slowly melt. Visitors are invited to practice these huts in the beauty of these decline. Water is recovered by a bassin. When the sculpture passes into the liquid state, it begins a new dialogue with the sun and becomes its reflection support.

Angelo Renna. Pink Mammals

Pink Mammals is a new thinking process about the relationship between human and nature. It is becoming a necessity to have a new “thought on the world” in order to change the natural conditions of our contemporary society. The design of the international wildlife center is an experimental project aiming to facilitate the cohabitation between the humans and the animals. Our vision is to take in consideration the needs of the human with the same attention given to the different animals and vegetation taken care of. Therefore, the existing human being and ecosystems have the same value. There is no center of any kind, just a non-anthropocentric environment. The idea for a new wildlife center is to create a different approach inside the natural reserve through a landscape strategy that joins the touristic needs with a new relationship to the nature. The project relies on a path 15 meter high from the ground level. This weak and performative infrastructure of a diameter of 2 km proposes an artificial interface that allows to create different conditions inside the park. The path allows to create a self-limitation inside the reserve in order to permit the nature to enter it freely. Meanwhile, it also […]

Francesco Zorzi.
